Discover the Wild Heart of Desolation Sound!
Let our local experts take you on a fascinating 3-hour tour of the world renowned
and beautifully breathtaking inlets and fjords of Desolation Sound.
With it's spectacular vistas and tranquil waters, Desolation Sound is a nature lovers dream. Encounters may include Dolphins, Porpoises, Sea Lions, Seals, Otters, Eagles, Orcas and other whales, including Humpback and Grey Whales.
Every trip is a unique experience, shaped by the animals that present themselves to you and to your interests.
With our tour, you can choose to quietly soak in the incredible beauty of Desolation Sound, or
engage our captain for First Nations and Ecological Interpretation.
One of our stops, Major Island is a recognized bird breeding site. There you are likely to find seals playing and swimming, sea lions sunning themselves and local and migrant birds like the Cormorant and other fascinating wildlife.
As we cruise up these remote passages, relative civilization is left behind and replaced by wilderness. The area mountains rise up to 6299 feet above sea level (Mt. Denman), and the waterfalls can drop more than 1600 feet to the ocean floor – an incredibly sheer drop from peak to valley in such a short distance.
The rare pebble beaches are surrounded by seemingly impenetrable rainforest. Torrential waterfalls, warm lakes, soaring peaks, thick forests, protected coves and bays, sandy beaches, and salmon-bearing rivers are just some of the ecosystems that provide essential habitats for countless and diverse species of wildlife. Deer, wolves, cougars, and black bears roam the forest, while in the remotest regions Grizzly bears feed on fish and vegetation along river banks and estuaries.

Grizzly Bear Viewing Tours in Toba Inlet, British Columbia, are hosted by the Klahoose First Nation and Access Point Marine Transportation and Tours. Klahoose Coastal Adventures is proudly First Nations owned and operated and a member of the Commercial Bear Viewing Association of BC . Our tour guides are from the local First Nations and have received comprehensive training to ensure your safety and comfort during your time in our territories. Enjoy your journey to our shores and be prepared to see amazing scenery and wildlife along the route.
Klahoose Coastal Adventures certified guides are ready upon arrival to
offer you and your guests:
- Bus Transportation 6 km to/from Grizzly viewing platforms
- Local area cultural information and interpretation
- Professional viewpoint platforms for up close and personal views of the Grizzly Bears.
From the dock your guide will transport you by road to one of six viewing towers, situated several feet from ground level. These viewing platforms are covered and designed to provide an optimal vantage point while maintaining a safe distance from the bears.
The tours are kept intentionally small to allow for the most intimate viewing experience.
During your tour, you will have a Klahoose First Nation guide, who is full of stories, interesting knowledge about the area and it's history, plus a keen eye for wildlife.
The guides are all trained with the Commercial Bear Viewing Association, and have been trained to recognize bear behavior; making your experience as comfortable and fun as, while you safely view our grizzled neighbours.
There is no food permitted in the grizzly bear viewing areas, mini-bus or viewing platforms. Depending on which tour you select, Lunch may be provided before or after your tour (please check confirmation email after booking)
To ensure you're well protected outside for the duration of the tour, suntan lotion and bug spray should be applied prior to leaving the welcome area, where your grizzly bear tour commences.
It's important to dress comfortable! The best way to dress for Toba is to wear closed toed shoes, and dress in layers to adjust for variable weather freely. The weather can change quickly in this area.
Make sure you check the weather forecast before your trip!
The grizzly bear tour requires you to be able to use a flight of stairs without assistance, and be able to get on and off of our boats and the mini-bus that transports you to the viewing platforms. The mini-bus will most often park right beside the tower. Other than that there is no major walking involved and limited movement inside the viewing platforms to ensure your comfort and distance from bears.
Portable outhouses and pit toilets are available at the dock area once you disembark your boat. There are no washrooms at the bear viewing areas, so guests should be prepared to go without washrooms for up to 3 hours.
Need to cancel or reschedule – no problem! Just contact us at least 24 hours prior to your adventure’s departure to reschedule or to cancel (and receive a full refund), no questions asked.
Groups of 10+ guests are subject to a 72-hour cancellation policy.
Special Deals & Promotional bookings are final sale, however they may be rescheduled at no charge with 24 hours notice. Please be sure to read the specific cancellation policies for promotions.
Sometimes things happen that are beyond our control (adverse weather conditions, technical or mechanical issues etc.) and sometimes we may not have enough passengers reserved to justify the emissions we’d create by sailing. In these situations, we reserve the right to delay or cancel a departure with 24 hours notice, and will reschedule your trip or provide a full refund at your discretion.
COVID-19 – Should circumstances result from government directions restricting travel, we will be happy to reschedule your adventure, or provide a full refund.
We provide half day and full day fishing excursions departing from Lund at the entrance of Desolation Sound. Book now as these trips book up quick.
We deliver campers and supplies to remote campsites throughout Desolation Sound. Need a restock throughout your visit? We can help with that too.
